Corby Railway Station commission has created the opportunity to mentor me throughout the process of researching and making a sculpture for the train station

The Corby Railway Station commission has also created the opportunity to Mentor local artist Wayne Summerfield throughout the process of researching and making this sculpture commission.

The appointment of a suitable local artist was discussed at length at the Steering Group Committee, and Wayne received an overwhelming endorsement from all concerned. Wayne has a considerable interest in metal fabrication and has numerous examples exhibited at various venues in Corby. The fact that this project involves metal fabrication will enable Wayne to study the methods and skills of a Fabrication team who are well versed in the production of monumental artworks for a global market.

In addition, Wayne has a range of other skills, which he will be able to explore during the research and production period for this landmark artwork destined for the Railway Station site. He will be documenting the various stages of design development, which will be developed into a video about the project. In addition he is keen to extend the reach of the project into the Corby Community and beyond via social networking and is in the process of setting up a bespoke Facebook page that the community can access to track the evolution of the sculpture.

Its interesting to look through Wayne’s own website, which is characterised by this apposite statement.

“Wayne believes every piece of metal wants to be something else. Looking beyond what it started life as. Everything is waiting to be a piece of art. I take on art as I experience life, to be creative. To use unusual materials and turn them into art. Push the boundaries to show how art can be created. In metal sculptures anything is possible.“

This extract links really well to the historic production of steel in Corby and also the undulating forms of the three proposed models for the site shown here at the Cube. The white hot metal that is intrinsic to the production process of steel is also central to thematic development of my ideas. The convoluting ribbons of steel referenced here by strips of MDF can be interpreted as “metal wanting to be something else”

I look forward to a productive period of collaboration with Wayne.
